Colton Dixon learned a lot about the music industry during his time on American Idol. Since some of the judges he worked with on Season 11 left the show we asked Colton who he thought would be a good addition to American Idol.

“I think Justin Timberlake would be a great judge on American Idol,” he told CBS Local. “I think Billy Joel would be a great judge on American Idol or Elton John. I think Elton John would be hysterical actually.”

Colton explained that it’s important to have judges who “are current and in the music industry.”

“Man, there’s so many great people. I think Rihanna would be another great one,” he said. “Whether you think they’re talented or not, they’ve been through it and they know the business side of it. To me that was what was most helpful.”

“From Jennifer, man she works so hard to get what she’s got. It was cool to see someone of her status have that work ethic,” he added. “It helped inspire me to work just as hard if not harder. I hope the kids see that this year.”

Colton is looking forward to the upcoming season and curious to see how the new judges fare.

“I know with Keith Urban . . . really excited to see what he brings to the table. Randy is always great, loved what he had to say. I’m nervous and excited to see what Mariah [Carey] and Nicki Minaj bring to the table. It’ll be a fun season.”

So what does he think of all those rumors of judge fighting?

“I don’t know if the whole Nicki Minaj, Mariah Carey thing is real or not. From what I saw in the video that leaked, it looked pretty legit to me,” he said. “It’s a TV show so there’s a lot of stuff that goes on behind the scenes that you’re like, ‘OK. I see why they’re asking me this question.’ They know what they’re working with and they plan around that but at the same time it’s all fresh for us.”

Either way, Colton will be watching.

“I’m sure whoever experienced the Nicki Minaj Mariah Carey thing was scared to death. I would have been. We’ll see how the season goes.”
