All music at Lollapaloozaceased a little before 3 pm on Saturday as the festival grounds were evacuated ahead of storm conditions that led to heavy winds and rain. But British five piece the Dunwells still managed to keep their 4:30 set time.
As festival-goers took shelter in the Hilton Chicago across the street from Grant Park, the Leeds, England-based band — which features a pair of siblings and a pair of cousins — commandeered a grand piano in a corner of a second-floor ballroom and staged an impromptu four-song set that mixed unreleased numbers with tracks from their folk-rock-influenced debut album, Blind Sighted Faith. A highlight was the plaintive ballad “Oh Lord,” on which singer Joseph Dunwell’s powerful vocals reverberated around the cavernous space.

For the young band, the off-the-cuff performance was all in a day’s work. “We’re used to doing that sort of thing,” guitarist and pianist David Dunwell said. “Back in England when we were first starting out we’d play in pubs at ten in the morning and then again at seven that night.”
Added Joseph, “We once did 40 shows in 20 days. We play wherever and wherever we can.”
